Subjects

Introduction

Highlands Christian Grammar School offers a variety of subjects to ensure that your child receives an excellent, well – rounded education. All of our subjects are taught from a Bible – based foundation.

English

The English curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. Teaching and learning programs should balance and integrate all three strands. Together the three strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing, and creating. Learning in English builds on concepts, skills and processes developed in earlier years, and teachers will revisit, strengthen, and develop these as needed.

Math

The proficiency strands Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning are an integral part of mathematics content across the three content strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. The proficiencies reinforce the significance of working mathematically within the content and describe how the content is explored or developed. They provide the language to build in the developmental aspects of the learning of mathematics.

Science

Science at HCG is presented from a Christian, Bible-upholding perspective. The science content includes the three strands of Science: Understanding, Science Inquiry Skills and Science as a Human Endeavour. The three strands of the curriculum are interrelated, and their content is taught in an integrated way. The order and detail in which the content descriptions are organized into teaching/ learning programs are decisions to be made by the teacher.

Art

The course consists of visual arts and performing arts and is sometimes taught by more than one teacher, depending on the areas of expertise available to us. The Arts is a learning area that draws together related but distinct art forms. While these art forms have close relationships and are often used in interrelated ways, each involves different approaches to arts practices and critical and creative thinking that reflect distinct bodies of knowledge, understanding and skills. The curriculum examines past, current, and emerging arts practices in each art form across a range of cultures and places.

Art consists of five subjects:

  • Dance
  • Media Arts
  • Visual Arts
  • Drama
  • Music

Bible

The course covers the main tenets of historical Christian doctrine supported by Scripture on every point. Where there are differences among Christians, these will be presented in a fair manner. Church history from the martyrdom of the apostles through to the Reformation will be explored.

Social Sciences

The Social Sciences curriculum entails the following subjects:

  • Civics and Citizenship, where students are introduced to democracy in the context of the familiar and personal. It explores an understanding of democracy as a rule by the people through learning about decision making within communities
  • Economics, which provides students with the opportunity to develop their understanding of economics and business concepts by exploring the importance of decision-making in everyday life.
  • Geography, which sees students developing their understanding of place. They explore the place they live in and belong to; learning to observe and describe its features.
  • History, which provides a study into personal and family histories. Students learn about their own history and that of their family, as well as that of different cultures and other parts of the world.

Technology

Technologies enrich and impact on the lives of people and societies globally. The world needs enterprising individuals who can make discerning decisions about the development and use of technologies and who can independently and collaboratively develop solutions to complex challenges and contribute to sustainable patterns of living. Technologies can play an important role in transforming, restoring, and sustaining societies and natural, managed, and constructed environments.

Business and Technology Studies encompasses two distinct but related subjects:

  • Design and Technologies, in which students use computational thinking and information systems to define, design and implement digital solutions.
  • Digital Technologies, in which students use computational thinking and information systems to define, design and implement digital solutions.
